Managers of documentation teams wanted to steer their writers away from creating information dumps and towards more action-oriented, outcomes-based documentation.
I interviewed the team to discuss their goals, uncover pain points, and collect examples of their work, using this research to inform the design of all workshop materials.
I also facilitated the workshop on their premises, leading discussions interspersed with activities that allowed the participants to immediately apply new concepts to actual work.
To evaluate the impact, I surveyed learners immediately afterwards and also followed up with the team a few months later. All survey respondents said they enjoyed the workshop overall and reported confidence in their ability to use their new skills on the job (see last portfolio image). The team member I interviewed months later said she noticed documentation had become more user-centered since the workshop. She also saw that colleagues regularly reminded each other of concepts from the workshop and showed how they were applying them.
